Late in the afternoon the other day, Daniel and John were both calling each other names that either had no meaning, but weren't nice sounding, or yelling at each other for something the other person did - typical. "Daniel and John, report to me now!" I called. They came to me quickly and with expressions of apprehension.
"John, if Daniel is not being nice to you, don't call him mean names. Just say, 'Daniel, dear, please stop. I don't like that, honey.' I am sure he will stop. In fact, he'll probably just start laughing." By this point in the conversation, both Daniel and John had completely lost their deflated expressions and were laughing heartily at the emphasis and drama I was putting into my examples.
I think, overall, they really liked this idea. My belief in this was completely and utterly confirmed when, immediately after dismissing them to carry on with the game they had been playing, they changed the game to chasing each other all around the house calling each other "Honey! Sweetie! Dear!" and shouting out orders to each other with very endearing names at the tail end of it. "Come here, Honey" and "Oh angel!" were some of the more frequent terms. Though, as could have been expected, the nice names have become more of a taunt than an endearing sobriquet, it has been very comical to listen to.
