Praying Out Loud

Yesterday evening while our family was in church praying the Rosary with the congregation before Mass, Daniel leans over to me and asks with an excited yet slightly embarrassed gleam in his eye, "Katie, is it who ever says the mystery first who gets to say the decade?"

"Yes, anyone who wants to say one, just says the mystery out loud and then they say the decade."

"Oooooh."

"Hail Mary, full of grace......" the Rosary was still being said. "Katie," Daniel interrupted again. "What are the 4th and 5th Joyful Mysteries again?" I went through all the Joyful Mysteries with him and then we whisperedly rehearsed exactly what he would say when the decade was over for him to start his. The 2nd Mystery was finished. There was a blank silence. Daniel looked over at me asking if he should say it now. I nodded to him expectantly. Opening his mouth to speak, he suddenly stopped, got red in the face almost burst out with laughter and decided he would wait for the next decade when another lady said gently, "The third Joyful Mystery is...."

The decade continued only for a little bit before Daniel leaned over to me once more saying, "Katie, what is the 4th Mystery again?"

I went through all the Mysteries with him once again, and he looked resolutely forward to the end of the decade so he could start his own. The Glory be came....Daniel looked to me again for reassurance but hesitated and another lady beat him to it: "The 4th Joyful Mystery is...."

Daniel turned to me with laughter in his eyes but his faced scrunched up in disappointment. "Don't worry, Dan. You still have one last chance."

He waited patiently, asked me once more -just to be sure - what the 5th Joyful Mystery was and was obviously still wondering whether or not he would regret doing this.

The Glory be finally came, immediately followed by a deep voice pronouncing the 5th Mystery. Daniel and I looked at each other again and chuckled. "Ahhhh!" I saw him mouth as he was obviously frustrated but thought it was funny, too. Daniel didn't even have a chance that time! Poor kid! But I think he was kind of relieved at the same time.

Brave guy. I used to hate leading the rosary.

That reminds me of years ago in mass one time; the deacon was saying the intentions of the Mass. I finaly plucked up enough courage to say an intention out loud during Mass. I felt very conspicous when I found out I wasn't supposed to do that. :)
