The Gift

I gave a pen to Michelle as a Christmas gift, but I thought that alone was rather boring, so I gave her a couple poems with it. I first gave her one called, 'On Girls Lending Pens,' by Taylor Mali, (which was a long story all about how a girl had a ton of pens that didn't work,) and then I made one up all on my own. Here it is.

                                                                           Your Pen
                                                                                 by
                                                                    Kathryn R. Lawless

Don't worry about this pen
I've tested it through and through
But do be careful whenever you lend
A pen to a friend, be careful, you goose

It is nearly perfect, but for a few things
Socially, you should know, it is very inept
It is a little vain, and it likes to keep thin
And DON'T be surprised that it has a lot of pep

It has a hard time rhyming
Though it should never splotch
It has no sense of timing
So you should leave that for your watch

It also is awful at spelling
As I'm sure you can see
While I was testing it
It spelled 'bee' with a 'T'

As long as you follow these few simple rules,
You could not go wrong, my dear,
Come on, what have you to lose?

Leave it by itself? That would never do,
It gets very lonesome, VERY lonesome, it's true!

It is very loyal, very loyal indeed,
Never lend it to a friend, I am sure it would bleed,
Right on their shirt or pants or paper
Keep it to yourself; that is much safer

Don't ever trust it for spelling
As I've told you before
For how often it is wrong
There is really no telling

And here's one thing more!

The whole point of this isn't to scare you
But more just simply to tell you
This pen is very much like your little sister
And wants you to hold it whenever you miss her.

P.S. Short version? I love you, and here is a pen from me to you!
